RED DEER- The unemployment rate in the Red Deer region rose slightly last month to 4.7 per cent from 4.4 per cent in January.

Despite the rise, our area still has the lowest unemployment rate in the province.

The Alberta rate climbed from 6.8 per cent to 7.3 per cent.

Nationally, it is the strongest two-month stretch of job creation since the spring of 2012.

Stats Canada reports the economy generated 55,900 net new positions last month -- all of them full time.

The February surge follows a gain of 66,800 positions in January.

The unemployment rate held at 5.8 per cent as more people started looking for work.
