RDC hockey players earn Athletes of the Week honours

A pair of hockey players have been named this week’s RDC Athletics Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week.

Queen’s goaltender Karlee Fetch is said to have developed her game throughout the season and is peaking at the perfect time.

This past week, the Hockey Queens had the task of facing the defending ACAC Champions, the MacEwan University Griffins, in the semi-final.

The fourth-year netminder was outstanding over the three game series and gave her Queens a chance to win.

This past Friday, Fetch stopped 39 shots (0.929) in a 4-2 setback in Edmonton, with one of the Griffins’ goals hitting the empty net.

At the Servus Arena, Fetch made 34 saves out of 35 shots (0.971) and was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game, in a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday.

Then in game three’s 3-1 loss on Sunday, Fetch turned aside 35 out of 37 shots (0.946) in Edmonton.

The third MacEwan goal found the open cage with Fetch on the bench.

Despite the Griffins shading the Queens two games to one, the Open Studies student could have easily been named the top player of the series, from both teams.

Over the three games, the student-athlete from Prince Albert incredibly made 108 saves out of 114 shots (0.947).

Elsewhere, Chase Thudium had another strong week on the ice for the Kings hockey team, recording four points.

The five-foot-eleven left winger helped the RDC Kings go a perfect 3-0.

In Wednesday’s 6-2 victory over the MacEwan University Griffins, Thudium struck on the power play, which turned out to be the game-winning-goal.

Then on Friday in Saskatchewan, the second year Business Administration student helped lead the Kings to a dominant 7-1 victory over the Briercrest College Clippers.

Thudium recorded one goal and two assists, including a helper on the winning goal.

Despite playing limited minutes this past Saturday due to injury, the student-athlete from Sylvan Lake played a role in the 4-3 road win, and finished the regular season as one of the premier goal scorers in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Hockey.

Thudium finished tied for first with 18 goals and second in the league with 37 points, only one back of SAIT’s Dean Allison.
