Renegades capture gold at Slush Cup

A competitive soccer team from Red Deer took home some hardware over the weekend after winning a gold medal in their pool at the Slush Cup tournament in Edmonton.

The U11 Renegade girls team went 3-0 in round robin play, defeating Airdrie FC 09 4-1, U10 Sherwood Park Phoenix 4-1 and Airdrie FC Aztec 8-0.

Coach Cole Grantham says it was a great performance from the team.

“We started off a little bit slow in our first game but the girls picked it up and followed through for the rest of our games here,” he exclaimed. “The reason for our success this weekend was hard work and dedication from all the girls and their parents. Throughout our last couple seasons leading up to this, the girls have gone to a few tournaments and have won their silver medals and now they’ve earned this gold medal.”

Grantham admits he’s most proud of the way the team has pulled together.

“The girls on the bench, the girls on the field, the way they’re passing and becoming a team now,” he explains. “It’s not an individual sport as we all know but that’s the thing I’m most proud of is their teamwork.”

The Slush Cup is a boarded and non-boarded indoor soccer tournament that features over 400 teams from all over Alberta and other western Canadian provinces.

Other Red Deer Renegade teams to earn hardware at the Slush Cup tournament include the U13 boys who won silver in 7v7 Pool B and the U13 Renegades Kelly / Flett team who also won silver in 7v7 Pool C.
