Project Dragonfly basketball mentor program launched for local youth

Mar 1, 2019 | 1:28 PM

Local basketball coach Ken King has announced a new fund for local youth called Project Dragonfly.

King has been working with Performance Connection, the Central Alberta Basketball Club and Pure Fitness CrossFit to create the groundwork for Project Dragonfly.

King says it will be able to support two Red Deer youth to improve fitness and discipline, as well as two to participate in club basketball.

“I’ve spent five years in Red Deer and worked hard to build a legacy. But what I realize now as I leave is that the legacy is not on the court but the truly important one is off of it with our youth. That is where the idea for Project Dragonfly gets it’s legs, in the memory of some of the most selfless people I know, I want to bring local funds to local youth in order to help better them through sport and fitness,” said King.

“I have been fortunate enough to come from a very loving family in all aspects. My grandparents were some of the most selfless people I’ve ever known. If I can leave one thing in my players and my students, it is that they remember to do stuff even when you don’t tweet it or post it.

“Red Deer will be the launchpad, but it doesn’t have to end there,” he adds.

“These are the things I am passionate about. The people I have met at Pure Fitness in Red Deer and the people I have met in basketball and education across the globe have had such a huge impact on me…it really just made sense to me to try to make this work.”
