13 medals Tuesday for Alberta at Canada Winter Games

It was Super Tuesday for Team Alberta at the 2019 Canada Winter Games with home province athletes earning 13 medals (five gold, five silver and three bronze).

The last time Alberta had a 12-medal day was February 23, 2011, in Halifax.

Red Deer’s own Kalena Soehn and Zach Blakely, who won medals Monday in the individual events, combined to secure a silver medal for Alberta in mixed team trampoline at the Collicutt Centre.

Alberta’s women took the silver and bronze medals in the two-run Giant Slalom race Tuesday at Nakiska.

Britt Richardson, 15 of Calgary who won the bronze in the Super G on Monday, raced to silver medal while Makenna Lebsack, 15, of Calgary took bronze.

In para-alpine, Tess Beasant, 14, of Calgary, won the gold medal in the women’s giant slalom and Hanna Chilson won bronze.

Spencer Allan, 18, a visually impaired skier from Airdrie won gold in the men’s Para-Alpine Giant slalom race.

Slalom events will be featured at Nakiska on Wednesday before the athletes return to Red Deer for the ski cross events.

At Westerner Park, Alberta won a whopping seven medals in judo.

In the 44kg category, Evelyn Beaton, 14, of Lethbridge won the gold medal. Beaton is the daughter of Head Coach Ewan Beaton, a two-time Olympian.

Ema Tesanovic, 16, of Calgary won the gold medal in the women’s 48kg category.

Alberta had two judokas in the 52kg category, with Kondelia Karas of Edmonton earning a silver medal and Michelle Grisales of Grande Prairie claiming bronze.

In the men’s 50kg category, Douglas O’Brien, 17, of Rockyview County won the silver medal.

Fighting in the 60kg category, Joel Demaere, 17, of Lethbridge claimed gold.

Finally, in the 66kg weight category, Nathan Demaere, 15, of Lethbridge took home the silver medal.
