Week two underway at Canada Winter Games

The second week of competition got underway Sunday at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

At the Pidherney Curling Centre, both Alberta teams were in action in the opening draw a facing Quebec. The men’s team easily took a 7-1 victory over Quebec in six ends while the women’s team earned a 6-3 victory in seven ends.

Team Alberta will face the Northwest Territories Monday at 10:00 a.m. and Newfoundland in the evening draw at 5:00 p.m.

All four members of Team Alberta won their respective preliminary matches in squash at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, advancing to the quarterfinals. Jana Dweek and Bethany Churchill each won their respective matches 3-0 to advance in the women’s tournament. In men’s action, Antonio Mendes and Seif Elfiky represented Alberta, winning their matches 3-1, 3-0 respectively.

Later in the afternoon, in quarterfinals, both Mendes and Elfiky dropped 3-0 their matches ending their tournament. The same can be said for Jenna Dweek, losing 3-1 to her opponent from Ontario. Bethany Churchill, however, defeated her opponent from Nova Scotia and advanced to the semifinals, set to take place tomorrow morning at 9:40 a.m.

The five-day team tournament also begun today with Team Alberta facing arch-rivals from British Columbia. The men dropped their match 3-1 while the women won 3-1 their matchup against BC. Tomorrow, Team Alberta will play against the Northwest Territories in the team tournament.

Alberta’s women’s hockey team dropped their opening match 6-1 to BC. Team Alberta will play against Nova Scotia on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Centrium.

No medals were awarded on Sunday. Alberta remains in second place in the overall medal standings, trailing only Quebec.
