RDC Athletics recap: Feb. 21 – 24

RED DEER- On Sunday, the RDC Mixed Curling team earned bronze at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships in Olds.

The Volleyball Kings captured fifth spot at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship in Edmonton and the Queens Volleyball team finished sixth in Calgary.

In a makeup game, the Hockey Kings shutout the MacEwan University Griffins in Sylvan Lake, with proceeds going to charity.

The Kings Basketball team downed the Briercrest College Clippers twice, sealing second in the south, and the Basketball Queens dropped a pair of road decisions in Saskatchewan, wrapping up their season.

Here is a summary of what happened.

Queens Volleyball, Feb. 21-23, ACAC Championship, Ambrose University

On, Thursday, the RDC Queens dropped a four set decision to the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (21-25, 16-25, 25-19 and 26-28).

Then on Friday, the Red Deer College Queens defeated the SAIT Trojans in four sets (20-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19).

The RDC Queens were edged in five sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 24-26 and 13-15) by the host Ambrose University Lions on Saturday, and the Queens placed sixth at the ACAC Championship.

Two Queens were recognized for their excellent play throughout the season.

Emma Holmes was named the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South Rookie of the Year and an All-Conference selection.

Libero Kaylee Domoney was also honoured as a member of the All-Conference Women’s Volleyball South team.

Chris Wandler was selected as the Women’s Volleyball South Coach of the Year.

Kings Volleyball, Feb. 21-23, ACAC Championship, NAIT

The Red Deer College Kings dropped their opening match to the U of A Augustana Vikings in five sets (25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25 and 12-15). 

On Friday, the Kings picked up a four set win over the Briercrest College Clippers (15-25, 25-19, 25-20 and 29-27).

The RDC Kings swept the King’s University Eagles (25-19, 25-12 and 25-20) on Saturday to wrap up the championship in fifth spot.

Regan Fathers was named the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year, and an All-Conference team selection in the south.

Mark DeWit joined Fathers on the All-Conference team.

Tickets for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship can be purchased online.

The Kings will host the national event from March 7 to 9 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

RDC Curling, Feb. 22-24, ACAC Championships, Olds College

On the final day of competition at the ACAC Curling Championships, all three Red Deer College teams gave it their all and were playing for bronze.

The mixed team came up big, capturing an ACAC bronze medal over the U of A Augustana Vikings.

RDC Head Coach Brad Hamilton was named the ACAC Curling Coach of the Year.

Andrew Jones received the Charles Morter Award, for his contributions to curling and the community, as voted by ACAC Curling coaches.

Kings Hockey, Friday, Feb. 22, NexSource Centre

The RDC Kings were backstopped by Arik Weersink’s 31 saves and shutout the MacEwan University Griffins 3-0 in Sylvan Lake.

Ryley Smith, Scott Ferguson and Lynnden Pastachak scored for RDC. In this charity game, proceeds from the 50/50 draw, along with donations, went to Sylvan Lake Community Partners Association.

The Red Deer College Kings (16-7-1-1) share third spot in the league with the SAIT Trojans (17-9-0- 0), although the Kings have a game in hand. Both teams have 34 points.

MacEwan University (18-6- 1-0) sits in second with 37 points.

NAIT (20-6-0-0) is in first with 40 points.

Queens Basketball, Friday, Feb. 22, Briercrest College

The RDC Queens pushed the Briercrest College Clippers late in Saskatchewan but came up just four points short (71-75).

Zeina El Barky led the Queens with 15 points.

Queens Basketball, Saturday, Feb. 23, Briercrest College

In a rematch, the Clippers downed the Queens 86-73.

Harneet Sidhu totaled 23 points, two rebounds and two assists, while connecting on nine out of ten from the field.

Katie Ballhorn added 13 points in RDC’s final game of the season.

Kings Basketball, Friday, Feb. 22, Briercrest College

Energized by Spencer Klassen’s 37 points, the RDC Kings handled the Briercrest College Clippers 93-79.

Anthony Harper contributed 13 points and Khurram Sultan had 11 in the win.

Kings Basketball, Saturday, Feb. 23, Briercrest College

The Red Deer College Kings exploded for 99 points and outscored the Clippers by 28 in a 99-71 road victory.

Barzin Eskandarkhah contributed 22 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Kings.

Kevin Szymanek finished with a double-double, recording 16 points and ten rebounds.

The Kings (13-8) finalized the regular season with eight consecutive wins, earning second spot in the south division and will face the U of A Augustana Vikings (15-9) in the opening game at the ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship on Thursday, February 28 at 3:00 p.m.

The Vikings were third in the north.
