Lacombe police are warning motorists that they’ve seen an increase in the number of vehicle thefts and residential break and enters over the past couple of weeks.

“Since February 16, 2019 police have responded to a large number of break and enters in the community. We want to encourage everyone to be vigilant and to call in any suspicious activity day or night as we offer 24 hours’ service, seven days a week,” says Constable Vaughan Bleasdale.

On February 18, police responded to an area near Bruns Cres after a witness observed two people attempting to break into a vehicle. Two suspects departed the scene in a silver 2000 Dodge Caravan.

Police were able to locate the vehicle near 50 Avenue at which time and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to pull over and stop for police continuing northbound on Highway 2A. No police pursuit was initiated.

Further investigation found the vehicle to be stolen out of the Wetaskiwin area.

Also on the morning February 18, police responded to the area of the Greenway Inn and Highway 2A in Lacombe where a vehicle had been reported stolen. The victim reported that they had left their vehicle running to warm it up while they waited inside. Police have yet to locate the vehicle.

Further investigation determined that a male suspect was standing outside the rear West entrance before quickly jumping in and driving away in the vehicle. He is described as approximately 5’10 – 6’0” tall, wearing a black coat, black toque and grey hoodie. The vehicle was later located in the Blackfalds area and returned to the owner.
