RDC Queens Volleyball ready for provincials

Feb 20, 2019 | 11:43 AM

The RDC Queens (16-8) will open the ACAC Championship against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (14-10), as one of the hottest teams in the league.

The Queens completed regular season competition with six consecutive match victories and winners of 15 of their past 18.

The two teams will play on Thursday, February 21 at 1:00 p.m. in Calgary. The Queens wrapped up second place in the south with 32 points and the Vikings placed third in the north with 28. In their past ten matches, the Queens have won eight and the Vikings picked up six decisions.

The Red Deer College Queens completed regular season competition on February 9 while several other teams played until February 16. Head Coach Chris Wandler and the Queens found their practices and training very fruitful.

“Our bye week has been quite productive,” he says. “We are trying to keep the focus on taking care of the small things in our game that has brought us here to this point.”

Libero Kaylee Domoney had a strong regular season, leading the league with 387 digs. First year outside hitter Emma Holmes sat tenth in ACAC Women’s Volleyball with 202 kills.

Vikings outside hitter Rae Metrunec is tied for eighth overall with 207 kills and has hit for 41.9 per cent efficiency, good for third in the ACAC.

While Wandler respects the Vikings, he feels that the Queens are well prepared and focused on how they need to play to be successful. “Any team that gets to the Conference Championship is going to present a challenge to the other team. Augustana is no different,” he says. “I like to believe that we have been training and preparing the right way the last couple of months. No matter who we face, this quarter final will be about us and playing our game, our style and our tempo. I’m a big believer of this group, and this team is a big believer in themselves.”
