Alberta stuns BC in hockey action to win round-robin pool

Team Alberta overcame a two-goal third period deficit Monday night to stun Team BC 5-4 in men’s hockey action at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

More than 2,000 fans turned out to the Westerner Park Centrium to take in the final preliminary round game for both teams.

BC charged out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Steel Quiring and Ty Gibson in the the first period and Graham Sward early in the second.

Alberta got on the boarda couple minutes later courtesy of Craig Armstrong. Colton Dach scored late in the middle frame to make it a 3-2 game.

BC made it 4-2 when Trevor Wong beat Alberta goalie Drew Sim on a breakaway 46 seconds into period three.

Marc Lajoie brought Alberta back within a goal at the 11:26 mark. Red Deer Rebels prospect Kyle Masters earned an assist on the 4-3 tally.

Zack Ostapchuk ignited the pro-Alberta crowd when he banged home a power play goal with 3:11 left to play to tie the game 4-4.

An even louder roar erupted when Sean Tschigerl scored the game winner at the 19:32 mark.

Sim, who is from Tees, AB, finished with 27 saves on the night while BC netminder Thomas Milic finished with 36.

Team Alberta wins Pool B and will play New Brunswick in the quarterfinals Wednesday night at the Centrium at 7:30.
