Rebels clip Tips in shootout to end losing skid

Feb 14, 2019 | 9:53 PM

A day after the Red Deer Rebels were #stuckinhoodriver due to bad weather, they finally hit the ice in Everett, Washington Thursday night to battle the Silvertips, the number one team in the WHL U.S. Division.

After goalies Ethan Anders and Dustin Wolf stood on their heads from start to finish, the Rebels pulled out a 2-1 shootout victory to put an end to their six-game losing streak.

The first period ended goalless with Everett outshooting Red Deer 13-9.

In the second period, Robbie Holmes beat Anders at the 1:40 mark for his 10th goal of the year.

Red Deer finally solved Wolf 11:26 into period three when Brandon Hagel scored on a breakaway. For Hagel it was his 32nd goal of the season and 94th of his career tying him with Greg Schmidt for 4th in Rebels franchise history.

Despite some great scoring chances neither team found the back of the net in overtime. Alexander Alexeyev scored the game winner for Red Deer in round five of the shootout.

Both teams fired 38 shots on goal. Neither team scored a power play goal on the night.

The Rebels continue their road trip Friday night vs. Seattle (8 p.m. on 106.7 THE DRIVE).
