Rebels take late penalty, suffer OT loss in Spokane

Feb 12, 2019 | 10:19 PM

The Red Deer Rebels remain winless in the month of February following a gut wrenching 4-3 overtime loss to the Spokane Chiefs Tuesday night to kick off their five-game U.S. Division road trip.

Spokane scored the game winning goal on a power play after the Rebels incurred a too many men penalty in the dying seconds of the third period, handing Red Deer a sixth-straight loss.

The Rebels opened the scoring 1:59 into the game on Akash Bains’ sixth goal of the year before Jaret Anderson-Dolan tied it for Spokane at the 6:10 mark.

Brandon Hagel put Red Deer ahead 2-1 with his 31st goal of the season 7:17 into period two. However, Ty Smith pulled Spokane even with a power play tally less than two minutes later. Adam Beckman scored with 1:18 left in the period to give the Chiefs their first lead of the night 3-2.

Oleg Zaytsev scored his 10th goal of the year 2:06 into period three to make it 3-3.

Smith, last year’s first round NHL Draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, scored the game winning tally just 30 seconds into OT.

Red Deer outshot Spokane 40-28 on the night but went 0-for-5 on the power play while the Chiefs were 2-for-5.

Bailey Brkin picked up the win in net for Spokane, outduelling Red Deer’s Ethan Anders.

The Rebels did earn a valuable point to pull even with the Calgary Hitmen with 61 points on the season.

They continue their road trip Wednesday night as they take on the Everett Silvertips (8 p.m. on 106.7 THE DRIVE).
