League playoff time for Generals, Eagles

Feb 8, 2019 | 4:11 PM

It’s playoff time for Alberta’s only men’s senior AAA hockey league, Allan Cup Hockey West.

Teams will play for the league title, but these playoffs have no impact on Allan Cup qualifying.

This year’s Allan Cup is being hosted in Lacombe, giving the Lacombe Generals automatic berth into the tournament. The Generals had a solid regular season finishing tied for first with the Rosetown Red Wings with a record of 10-6-2.

Generals Manager Jeff McInnis says the league playoffs are still important for his team going into the Allan Cup.

“Close games aren’t a bad thing; close games are a good thing,” he says. “As a general manager you always look at other teams and compare your men to others, and who you’d covet, and man I wouldn’t trade our guys for the world.”

McInnis knows his first round playoff match-up against the Stony Plain Eagles will be no cake-walk.

“They’ve got depth…they’ve got some pieces there…we had a game there last Friday that showed it’ll be a close series. I find I’m really looking forward to Saturday.”

The Generals and Stony Plain kick off their best-of-five league semifinal series Saturday in Lacombe at 8 p.m.

Also Saturday night, the Innisfail Eagles and Rosetown Redwings begin their semifinal series in Rosetown. Game two goes there on Sunday.
