A competitive rugby athlete from Red Deer has been named this month’s Alberta Sport Development Centre-Central (ASDC) Athlete of the Month for January.

Zac Sanderson, 17, is a grade 11 student at Hunting Hills High School and this past December was named to Rugby Canada’s U18 National Team and also competed as a member of Team Canada in San Diego, California.

As scrum half/fly half on the rugby pitch, Sanderson has represented Team Alberta for the past 3 years and has played with the Red Deer Titans Rugby Club since he was 13-years- old in five different age groups.

In fact, Titans Rugby recently awarded Sanderson with the “Titans Passion for Rugby Award” after helping his club teams and provincial teams capture multiple medals.

Officials say Sanderson is also looking forward to earning his very first International Cap as a member of Team Canada in the very near future.

Sanderson is currently waiting to see if he will selected to play at Shawnigan Lake, BC this summer for Rugby Canada and is also preparing to play for Alberta Rugby Sevens at the Canadian Western Championships this February in Edmonton.

In addition, Sanderson plays football with the Hunting Hills High School Lightning and was the Lightning’s Offensive MVP in 2016.

An Honor Roll student at Hunting Hills, Sanderson is looking to secure a scholarship to play rugby/football at University.
