Community groups receive first round of anti-racism grants

Thrity-three organizations across Alberta are receiving funds for the first time through the province’s Anti-racism Community Grants

More than $2 million was committed to groups for 2018-19, and the grants come following a recommendation of the government’s Taking Action Against Racism report.

“One of Alberta’s strengths is its diversity. Racism has no place in our province. That is why our government is making life better for all Albertans by supporting projects that are working to combat racism and promote inclusiveness,” says Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism. “With these grants, non-profit groups will be able to educate, inform and engage community members across Alberta.”

The dollars are being doled out via two streams, one for broader community initiatives, and another for Indigenous-related projects.

Eligible organizations can apply for matching grants of up to $25,000 for a range of projects including training and education, development of informational resources, and support services and capacity building.

In Red Deer, two initiatives are receiving the financial aid.

The first is through the Red Deer Urban Aboriginal Voices Society where $21,003 will assist in training Indigenous community members, including youth and elders, to understand racism and facilitate community conversations about Indigenous cultures and the impact of racism.

The other is at Shining Mountains Living Community Services where $17,040 will go towards providing teaching on Aboriginal culture and perspective, and the basic truth of respect and equality, as is stated on the Government of Alberta website.

Applications for the next round of grants are due by March 1.
