A Red Deer man is being recognized as one of Alberta’s Top 30 Under 30.

Adam Goodwin, 29, has been selected to appear in the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation’s 2019 Top 30 Under 30 magazine: The Gender Equality Edition.

Nominated by their community and selected by a committee of peers, officials say the annual Top 30 Under 30 Magazine showcases the work of 30 outstanding Alberta youth working to make the world a more just, fair, and sustainable place for all.

This year’s edition concentrates on the work youth are doing to address gender inequality, with Goodwin said to be nominated for the significant amount of personal time he invests in promoting sports for peace and development.

Goodwin is described as particularly passionate about getting females into sport, recently wrapping up a long-term project supporting a Canadian boxing program for girls from lower income homes.

“Through sport4one, I am working on gender equity, in and through sport,” says Goodwin, in a press release. “Increasing participation in recreation and sport has a positive health impact for participants. Positive health can play a role in success in education and in the job market.”

Goodwin says the industry employs sport as a means for economic, environmental and social development.

“I became a change maker in recreation and sport due to some of its inequities,” adds Goodwin. “There is at least a 20 per cent difference in participation rates between males and females in terms of who participates in sports in Canada. This is seen in many areas of the world.”

Officials say the magazine, now in its eighth year, is produced by the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC) as part of International Development Week celebrations February 3-9, 2019.

The Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC) is described as a coalition of voluntary sector organizations located in Alberta, working towards a world where all people can fulfill their potential and prosper, become engaged citizens in peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, and thrive in a healthy, sustainable world.

The Council works towards ending poverty and achieving a peaceful and healthy world with dignity and full participation for all.

The 2019 Top 30 Under 30 Magazine: The Gender Equality Edition will be released at the Magazine Launch in Edmonton on February 7 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the University of Alberta Students’ Union Building (8900 114 St).

Attendees are invited to hear from, meet, and mingle with past and current Top 30 Under 30s; ACGC staff, board and members; as well community leaders.
