Canada Winter Games Torch Relay moves into central Alberta

RED DEER- The MNP Canada Winter Games Torch Relay is moving into central Alberta.

The relay will pass through Rimbey today, Rocky Mountain House tomorrow and Leduc on Friday.

Blackfalds is gearing up to welcome the torch on Monday, January 29 at the Abbey Centre, 4500 Womacks Roard. Start time is 3:30 p.m. with a ceremony set for 4:30 p.m.

Six local runners will carry the torch through Blackfalds.

On January 31, the Torch Relay will make a stop in Olds.

Lacombe and area residents are invited to join the celebration and cheer on local torchbearers on Saturday, February 2.

Seven Lacombe torchbearers will carry the torch on a loop around Cranna Lake beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Michener House Museum. The relay will pass through downtown, up along Woodland Drive before winding its way past the Central Alberta Christian High School, Lacombe Composite High School and the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex on its way down to for a special ceremony at the Lacombe Memorial Centre. Next stop on the Torch Relay is Sylvan Lake on February 5.

Ponoka is the final stop on the national torch relay before it arrives in Red Deer for the opening of the 2019 Canada Winter Games on February 15.

Ponoka residents are invited to join the celebration and cheer on nine local torchbeaers on Thursday, February 7 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Ponoka Stampede grounds and returning back to the Stampede grounds about an hour later. The public is invited to a formal ceremony and celebration afterwards at the Stagecoach Saloon at 12:30 p.m.

The torch relay will pass through Downtown Ponoka along 50 St. before winding its way past Ponoka Secondary Campus, Ponoka Elementary School and St. Augustine School as it circles back to the Stampede grounds.

“As co-sponsors of the 2019 Canada Winter Games, the Town of Ponoka and the Ponoka Stampede were selected as the final stop on the torch relay when all the excitement is reaching its peak just before the Games begin the following week,” says Ponoka Mayor Rick Bonnett.
