BLACKFALDS- Following the execution of a search warrant on Jan. 17 at a home in Blackfalds, 14 insecure firearms were seized including one that was reported stolen earlier at a break and enter in Ponoka. A stolen vehicle was also recovered.

As a result, Kevin John Brown, 49, of Blackfalds has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, less than $5,000 (x2), unsafe storage of a firearm (x12), and fail to comply (x15).

On Jan. 17, a Blackfalds General Investigation Section (GIS) member was conducting patrols when he located a stolen vehicle at a residence on Westridge Drive.

With the assistance of Sylvan Lake RCMP GIS and Lacombe Police Service, a search warrant was granted and executed at the residence associated to the stolen vehicle.

Inside the residence, several insecure firearms were seized.

Brown, who was on a court order prohibiting him from possessing firearms, was arrested without incident and will appear in Red Deer provincial court on Jan. 21.

Since 2018, Blackfalds RCMP has secured funding for a two person plainclothes GIS. Red Deer County and Lacombe County each fund a position.

This unit was established to tackle serious crimes, and crimes linked between jurisdictions.

The primary focus of the GIS is to dedicate time to identifying underlying causes of crimes and to try to prevent them.
