Past and present Tigers set to face-off in Alumni game

Jan 18, 2019 | 8:45 AM

Sylvan Lake’s NexSource Centre will be the site of the second annual Sylvan Lake Midget AA Tigers Alumni Game Friday night.

The pub night fundraiser and alumni game brings both past and present Midget AA Tigers together for some hockey and an evening of fond memories.

The evening kicks-off with the alumni game itself at 7:45 p.m. and is followed by the 2019 Midget Tigers pub night fundraiser in the Viewpoint Lounge.

Officials say the game will see 36 players and four coaches from as far back as the original 1982-83 Tigers team, through to recent graduates of the program taking part.

It’s expected a strong mix of players throughout the decades will be divided into two teams and relive the ‘glory days’ with a fun and hopefully pain-free hockey game.

Officials point out there is a good cross section of players attending who went on to play pro, college and junior hockey, while many others went on to become successful local business owners. Others meanwhile are coming in from out-of-province to be part of the event.

Brian Bolding and Rob Wallator, two original Tigers from the 82-83 team are in the lineup for this year’s game, with the two teams being guided by past coaches of the program.

Team Parsons will have local hockey legend Graham Parsons and Doug Balough managing the bench, while Team Barnes will have Scott Barnes and Cal Thudium behind the bench.

“This is such a great event for everyone,” says event spokesperson Tyler Lightbown in a press release. “It’s a great opportunity for decades of players to come back and be a part of something special. It also lets this year’s team see first-hand how important the Tigers are to our community.”

“Last year’s event was very successful as the team’s fundraiser but it was just as successful in connecting past players with current players,” adds Lightbown. “The Tiger’s pride that connects these players has always been a strong bond and now with the event being an annual tradition, it will just continue to grow and keep the Tiger’s tradition alive and well in the years ahead.”

Pub night tickets can be purchased for $30 and includes a roast beef dinner, door prizes and many other activities.

The Alumni game is free to attend.
