Conceptual design approved for new Sylvan Lake sports park

Jan 16, 2019 | 8:34 AM

Plans are moving along for a new multi-use recreation and sports area in Sylvan Lake.

Town Council has signed off on the Conceptual Design for Pogadl Park, an 80 acre facility to be located west of 60 Street.

The family of Ed and Glenda Pogadl donated 20 acres of land for the park in 2016. The Town of Sylvan Lake has purchased an additional 54 acres and received six acres as a Municipal Reserve
contribution.

The Concept Design, which provides a general overview of how the site could be designed, was developed after public engagement with local user groups and the community as a whole.

Town officials say they are committed to community collaboration and fiscal responsibility while working on Pogadl Park.

“One thing that is important to keep in mind is – this is a long-term plan with incremental, phased development,” says Mayor Sean McIntyre.

“Once adopted, actual construction will take years, and will rely on community support, partnerships, and possible grant opportunities. The Design Concept for Pogadl Park may change over time, as the Town identifies opportunities and challenges, partnerships, as well as collects public feedback.”

The next step is to provide Town Council project plan for “Phase One” of construction, which is funded through the 2019 Capital Budget. The Town of Sylvan Lake is also seeking grant funding and sponsorship opportunities to help offset the costs.

New baseball diamonds were identified as a Council Strategic Priority for 2013 – 2017. The 2018 – 2021 Council Strategic Plan identifies “the complete design, and construction of Pogadl Park, Phase 1, including campgrounds, ball diamonds, soccer fields, washrooms, and parking lot,” as a priority.

The current baseball diamonds located at Four Seasons Park were constructed in the mid-1980s. Town officials point out that the park is unable to expand due to location restrictions, and given the proximity to an arterial road is a safety concern.

The Town’s Open Spaces Master Plan flags a lack of outdoor amenities in Sylvan Lake, namely baseball diamonds, tennis courts, soccer pitches and playgrounds. Newer sports such as pickleball have also been identified.

A spray park is also recommended as part of the Conceptual Design for Pogadl Park.
