First Nations show interest in Trans Mountain pipeline

Jan 16, 2019 | 6:04 AM

TSUUT’INA NATION- First Nations that produce oil and gas in Canada will hear presentations today at the Indigenous Energy Summit on how they might take ownership of major energy projects.

The Indian Resource Council-Canada — represents over 130 Indigenous groups with energy assets on their lands — says a session will feature presentations on financing models that could be followed to allow ownership of major projects including the Trans Mountain pipeline from Edmonton to Burnaby, B-C.

When the federal government bought Trans Mountain and its controversial expansion project from Kinder Morgan last year for 4.5-billion dollars, it signalled that it did not intend to hold it for the long term.

Premier Rachel Notley says she’s excited about the Trans Mountain proposal and in favour of any plan that helps move the project forward.
