A pair of basketball players have been announced as this week’s RDC Athletics Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week.

This past Friday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, Sandra Garcia-Bernal helped the Queens defeat the SAIT Trojans 55-38.

Her high energy and relentless work ethic were on display as she contributed 12 rebounds, nine points, two assists and two steals in the home victory.

The second-year open studies guard from Valencia, Spain was said to be effective down low and from the outside, connecting on three out of four attempts from beyond the arc.

On Saturday, Garcia-Bernal recorded five steals, three rebounds, three points and one assist in a 39-57 road loss to SAIT.

Team officials say she is also challenging for the league lead in rebounds and currently sits in fourth spot in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball with 10.6 rebounds per game.

For the Kings, fourth year Bachelor of Education student Spencer Klassen totaled 32 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal in the 37 minutes played during a 102-99 victory over the previously undefeated and number one ranked team in Canada SAIT Trojans at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Friday night.

Then on Saturday, the six-foot-two guard led the way for the Kings in Calgary, accumulating 33 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block over 38 minutes.

The Red Deer native’s 25.3 points per game leads ACAC Men’s Basketball.
