New lights bring nighttime skiing to River Bend

Jan 10, 2019 | 10:47 AM

Thanks to a $400,000 project that has been years in the making, nighttime skiing is now a reality at River Bend Golf and Recreation Area.

Grand opening celebrations were held Wednesday for the new “Light Park” which includes nearly four-kilometres of newly-lit ski trails.

Provincial grant funding of $200,000 went toward the project while Peavey Industries donated $100,000

About $20,000 is still to be raised to round out the funding for the project. Those wishing to make a contribution can do so through GoFundMe.

The high-efficiency LED lighting is expected to last 20+ years. Nova Chemicals donated most of the underground wiring required to power the light park.

The lighting is a part of a 2019 Canada Winter Games Legacy project.

River Bend will host the biathlon events during week one of the 2019 Games and cross-country and para-nordic events during week two.
