A Red Deer teacher recently dismissed from his job is facing charges for child sex-related offences.

Norman Joseph Howes is charged with five counts including sexual counsel of a child, sexual exploitation, luring a child under 18 years of age, making/printing/distributing child pornography, and sexual contact with a child.

Howes appeared in court December 31 and was released on $3,000 bail. His next appearance in Red Deer provincial court is scheduled for January 17.

The 60-year-old was a teacher at Westpark Middle School. He is no longer employed there.

Court documents indicate there are three complainants relating to the case.

RCMP incorrectly told rdnewsNOW on Monday that a publication ban was in effect regarding the name of the accused and the specific charges against them. Red Deer Public Schools also mentioned the publication ban in a release.
