RED DEER- Stats Canada numbers show the Red Deer area unemployment rate at 4.4 per cent in December, the lowest in Alberta and a full per cent drop from 5.4 per cent in November.

The local jobless rate in December 2017 was 5.5 per cent.

The provincial numbers are not as positive as Alberta lost 16,900 net jobs last month, as an increase in part-time work was far outweighed by a loss of 36,200 full-time positions.

The December unemployment rate was 6.4 per cent and is a tick higher than November's 6.3 per cent.

Nationally, the unemployment rate stayed at its 43-year low of 5.6 per cent last month as the economy closed out 2018 with the addition of 9,300 net new jobs.

That followed a gain of 94,100 net jobs in November, the biggest monthly increase since March of 2012.
