Employers encouraged to apply for STEP

Jan 4, 2019 | 5:54 AM

EDMONTON- Applications are open once again for the Summer Temporary Employment Program.

The program allows businesses to create work opportunities for high school and post-secondary students between May and August.

The program provides a $7 per hour wage subsidy for employers.

“Alberta students deserve good jobs and the best possible training, and Alberta businesses deserve the labour resources they need to thrive,” said Christina Gray, Minister of Labour, in a statement. “Since we brought STEP back in 2016, the program has provided nearly 9,000 jobs for students across the province. Employers who hire students improve job prospects for young Albertans and can hire additional resources to sustain and build their business.”

In 2018, the program helped nearly 1,400 employers hire 3,050 students for summer positions.

The program is available for small businesses, non-profit organizations, public libraries, school boards, post-secondary institutions, municipalities, and First Nations and Metis settlements.

The program was reintroduced in 2016, and receives $10 million each year in funding from the province.

Applications must be submitted before the Feb. 8 deadline.
