The Red Deer Optimist Rebels have won their pool and are heading back to the playoffs at the Mac’s Tournament in Calgary.

Red Deer held on to defeat the Notre Dame Hounds 2-1 on Sunday to finish round robin play with a perfect 4-0 record.

Josh Zinger opened the scoring for Red Deer with 5:37 remaining in the second period.

Sawyer Senio made it 2-0 less than seven minutes into period three. Notre Dame pulled within a goal just 13 seconds later on a goal that appeared to be kicked in but was allowed by the officials.

Red Deer had another apparent goal disallowed in the third period but still held on for the win.

Bretton Park turned in a solid effort between the pipes for Red Deer in making 26 saves.

Cade Mason had an assist and was named Player of the Game for Red Deer.

The Optimist Chiefs will meet Lethbridge in quarterfinals for the second straight year Monday at 9 a.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena. Red Deer and Lethbridge have met twice in Alberta Midget Hockey League action this season with each team winning 3-2 on home ice.

Should Red Deer win they would advance to the semifinals on Monday (games at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.). The Mac's Tournament championship game goes New Year's Day at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
