Meerman, Mason lead Optimist Chiefs to third win at Mac's Tournament

Brett Meerman and Cade Mason each had four points as the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs won a wild one at the Mac’s Tournament Saturday afternoon 7-6 over the Calgary Northstars.

Red Deer held a 3-2 lead after the first period on a pair of goals from Meerman, including a power play tally, and one from Sawyer Senio.

Cole Muir, Meerman and Mason scored for the Optimist Chiefs in the second period as they carried a 6-5 lead into the final frame.

Red Deer and Calgary traded goals in the third period, Deegan Mofford scoring a power play goal for the Optimist Chiefs.

Optimist Chiefs goalie Logan Breen allowed five goals on 18 shots before giving way to Bretton Park who allowed one goal on 11 shots.

Red Deer (3-0) wraps up round robin play on Sunday versus the Notre Dame Hounds (2-1) at 11:45 a.m. The Optimist Chiefs can clinch first place in their pool and a spot in the quarterfinals with a win.
