Optimist Chiefs 2-0 at Mac’s Tournament after comeback win

The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs are 2-0 at the Mac’s Tournament in Calgary after a thrilling 5-4 win Friday afternoon over the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, top top-ranked team in the BC Minor Midget League.

Red Deer opened the scoring on a power play goal from Dylan Kuefler 10:20 into the first period. Fraser Valley replied with a power play tally of their own before Brendan McBride put the Optimist Chiefs ahead 2-1 with just four seconds left in the period.

Fraser Valley surged ahead on the strength of three second period goals, including one 21 seconds into the frame. Tristan Lambert scored Red Deer’s lone goal of the frame at the 12:03 mark.  

Brett Meerman tied the game for Red Deer 7:29 into period three. Lambert scored the eventual game winner at 13:49.
