Conservation group offers free Christmas trees near Pine Lake

Dec 9, 2018 | 10:08 AM

A conservation group offered free Christmas trees on Saturday in central Alberta as part of an effort to rid a property of Colorado blue spruce trees.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada says the trees aren’t native to Canada, and are from a tree farm that was part of a property the conservancy acquired near Pine Lake in 2011.

Instead of cutting down all the blue spruce trees at once, the group says it plans to gradually remove them over the next decade to give the native species more room to grow.

The conservancy held a similar event yesterday in Saskatchewan to remove non-native spruce trees from a property south of Saskatoon.
