Accused groper appears in court

Dec 5, 2018 | 11:01 AM

A man accused of committing sexual assault and indecent acts in downtown Red Deer made a brief court appearance Wednesday.

Daniel Leonard, 41, appeared in Red Deer provincial court via CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre where he is being held in protective custody. He faces 10 counts of sexual assault, indecent acts, fail to comply with probation and breach of conditions in relation to an incident on Nov. 28.

City Mounties have been investigating multiple sexual assault incidents in the downtown area in recent weeks. On Oct. 18 they asked the public for help in identifying a man wanted in relation to a pair of indecent acts. RCMP have yet to link Leonard to each of the occurrences they are investigating.

In February of this year, Leonard was sentenced for a 2016 sexual assault in downtown Red Deer. He was previously convicted for sexual assaults on two women in Edmonton in 2014, and served more than two years in a U.S. prison for making thousands of harassing phone calls to women before being deported back to Canada in June 2013.
