100 Men Red Deer raises over $6,000 for The Lending Cupboard

The Lending Cupboard Society of Central Alberta – TLC has been chosen as the latest recipient of a significant charitable donation from 100 Men Red Deer.

During its most recent meeting Monday night, 100 Men Red Deer, a group of local men who get together four times a year to raise money for a local charity, voted to donate their funds raised December 3 to The Lending Cupboard, an organization which loans out medical equipment to central Albertans who need it.

100 Men Red Deer Past President Dan Sims says the three charities they had to choose from this time were The Lending Cupboard, Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and Central Alberta Brain Injury Society, which all made presentations to the over 60 men in attendance at The Hideout in Gasoline Alley.

“We raised $6,000 plus,” explains Sims. “I say plus because there’s some money that comes in from members who were not present at the meeting, they send their money directly to the charity. There was a lot of excitement in the room, some new members and people bringing non-perishable items for the food bank as well, so we did a lot for the community last night and I feel very happy about that.”

Sims says he’s also proud of what 100 Men Red Deer has been able to do for the community over the past four years of its existence.

“We have a lot of good ideas for the upcoming year in 2019,” states Sims. “We also want to make sure the awareness is out there of 100 Men, so we can actually get out there and help community. We call ourselves as one of the simplest charities to be involved in, you show up, have a beverage and you get to network, donate and leave with a good feeling.”

Sims sends out a big ‘thank you’ to all the members that continue to come back each meeting.

“It’s those type of people that really make this happen for those charities that are out there,” he explains. “The nice thing is, when the money is raised, it stays in central Alberta as opposed to going somewhere that we don’t even know and so it directly impacts our community.”

Dawna Morey, Executive Director of The Lending Cupboard Society of Central Alberta – TLC, says they are truly overwhelmed by the support of central Albertans.

“Philanthropy is alive and well in central Alberta,” she exclaims. “Last night we were the chosen group and we are thankful for that, feeling very blessed and it makes it even more special during the giving season. So ‘thank you’ to 100 Men for choosing us last night and continue your great work in central Alberta.”

As for the donation itself, Morey says the money will be used to address supply concerns regarding some specialized equipment.

“We’ll certainly make use of it in that area, as well an initiative that we know we’ll be doing some expansion on,” she explains. “We’ll be highlighting that in our newsletter that will be going out later this week. It’s the area of our delivery service, so a van that was donated to us by Lacombe Ford is used to deliver equipment and pick up equipment from people that are really home-bound and can’t get into The Lending Cupboard.”

100 Men Red Deer has its next meeting on March 11, 2019.
