Nov 20, 2018 | 3:35 PM

One man is in custody after a police vehicle was rammed by a suspect in a stolen truck in Ponoka on Monday.

Mounties responded shortly after 8:30 a.m. after learning a stolen truck was located at a residence in town.

Officers found the truck and when the vehicle tried to leave, activated their emergency equipment to effect a traffic stop.

The stolen Dodge Ram accelerated backwards and struck the front end of the RCMP truck, resulting in both members in the police truck suffering minor injuries.

Mounties say the suspect in the stolen truck fled, and was seen to be driving dangerously while leaving town.

Police continued to investigate the target residence and located a second stolen truck which was seized. While there, the suspect returned and was arrested without incident.

Caleb Joseph Shimwell, 20, of no fixed address is facing seven charges, including two counts of assaulting a peace officer,  operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer, operating a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner, two counts of stealing a motor vehicle and fail to comply with conditions of a recognizance.

Shimwell remains in custody and is scheduled for a court appearance in Ponoka on November 23 via CCTV.
