Trial for alleged gang associate adjourned until next year

The trial for an alleged Red Scorpion gang associate charged in a major Red Deer drug bust four years ago has been adjourned until next year.

The adjournment was requested by defence lawyer Randy MacDonald in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday after he received new disclosure provided recently by police and the Crown.

Court heard the disclosure includes video, papers and text messages that are relevant to the trial.

Justice Steven N. Mandziuk agreed to the request and adjourned the trial until January 21, 2019, saying, “The trial process could be rendered unfair if it proceeds today.”

MacDonald is representing Robin Joseph Stewart, a man police describe as an associate of the Red Scorpions gang.

Stewart was arrested and charged along with three others on July 23, 2014 when RCMP, Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), Calgary Police and Airdrie RCMP executed search warrants in Red Deer County, Airdrie and Calgary.

Mounties say the searches turned up a loaded semi-automatic handgun, stolen shotgun with ammunition, quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin among other drugs, in addition to scales, packing and other drug paraphernalia.

Stewart’s trial is scheduled to run for five days.
