Remand Centre escapee sentenced to nine months

One of four men who escaped from the Red Deer Remand Centre last June has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

Dallas Albert Rain, 28, was sentenced in Red Deer Provincial Court on Wednesday after earlier pleading guilty to charges of breaking out of prison and being unlawfully at-large in Canada.

Rain however was given credit for time already behind bars, so as of November 14 had 63 days left still to serve.

Rain was initially incarcerated on June 6 for other matters but broke out of prison shortly after midnight on June 12 along with three other men by smashing out a ground-floor window at the Red Deer Remand Centre.

One escapee was captured soon after the break-out while two others were arrested following an incident near Innisfail later that afternoon.

Rain was arrested in Rocky Mountain House June 29.

Court head Wednesday that Rain’s motivation for the prison-break was to get a fix for his addiction to methamphetamine.

Judge David Plosz said “Prison breaks are a serious offence, always have been, always will be.”

Rain’s 63 days still to serve run consecutively to any previous sentence yet to serve prior to the June 12 prison break.
