Nov 13, 2018 | 11:27 AM

A youth from Sylvan Lake is among a small group of Canadian athletes to bring home a medal from the 2018 International Racquetball Federation World Junior Championships held in Mexico this month.

Canadian athletes brought home four medals from the event held November 4-10, with Sylvan Lake’s Alexis Iwaasa earning a bronze medal in the U18 Girls Doubles, along with partner Marjolaine Parent of Saint-Jacques de Montcalm, QC.

Team Canada also won two other bronze medals in doubles events.

In the team standings, the Canadian girls team finished in fourth place and the boys team was sixth. This gave Canada a combined fourth place finish at the tournament, which is one place higher than in 2017.

The next major event for several of the athletes competing at the World Junior Championships will be the Racquetball Canada National Team Selection Event being held in Valleyfield, QC from November 23 to 25. Tournament results are part of the criteria used to select Canada’s team for the 2019 Pan Am Championships and the 2019 Lima Pan Am Games.
