Trial to start this week in fatal Red Deer stabbing

Jury selection began today for a man due to stand trial in a fatal stabbing in north Red Deer three years ago.

Daniel Boyd Sawyer, 34 is charged with second degree murder in the November 18, 2015 incident that resulted in the death of Allan Beach.

The 31-year-old passed away from injuries suffered after being stabbed in the Village Mall Parking lot near the Blarney Stone pub.

Sawyer was originally scheduled to stand trial in the summer of 2016 but the trial was delayed as Sawyer’s defence lawyer was still seeking additional disclosure from the Crown.

Well over 100 prospective jurors were in attendance at the Red Deer Provincial Court House Tuesday, with Court of Queen’s Bench Justice The Honourable John William Hopkins notifying those in attendance that 12 jurors would be selected along with two alternates.
