MEDICINE HAT, AB – Police are asking the public for information after a dog was shot by a pellet gun this week in the city’s southeast.

According to police, a Collie/Shepard cross was hit by a pellet round in the left shoulder sometime between Wednesday and Saturday in the zero hundred block of Rossland Boulevard SE.

On Saturday, the owner of the dog was grooming his pet when he noticed dried blood and a wound on its shoulder, before pulling a round metal pellet from the wound. The dog has since been treated for the injury.

Police are considering the case as cruelty to an animal, with maximum punishments for those found guilty being a prison term of five years of an indictable offence, and a prison term of 18 months or a fine of $10,000 for a lesser offence.
