Rocky town councillor wants to explore tiny housing options

A councillor with the Town of Rocky Mountain House is hoping to spearhead an initiative to expand the town’s housing options.

Merin Fraser made a notice of motion Tuesday for council to make strides in accommodating tiny houses, micro houses, small houses and eco-village communities with the town’s boundaries.

Fraser said Tuesday that the concept is something she’s been following in Okotoks and other communities with their discussions over eco-villages.

“There’s a lot of steps from the traditional Land Use Bylaw where housing seems to be needed,” said Fraser. “I just wanted to put a notice of motion that there’s more than just the Land Use Bylaw that we’re going to need to look at if we’re looking at tiny houses. Maybe we should start looking at different developers that are looking at not only the tiny houses but the micro houses which are tiny houses but they’re stationary and the small houses which are up to 1,000 sq.ft.”

Fraser adds that determining where these houses would fit and preparing the community for the changes they would bring, would also be part of the process in helping to avoid potential friction in the community.

“Okotoks people didn’t understand about the communal gardens or the communal green space and the community halls that were going to be villages,” she explained. “It wasn’t just that it’s a smaller square footage but they’re full-functioning communities. So just to make sure that we’ve got the information for developers and so the public knows that we’re moving in this direction.”

Fraser’s notice of motion will be discussed at council’s next regular meeting November 20.
