2019 Canada Winter Games launch teaching resource

Nov 6, 2018 | 1:44 PM

The 2019 Canada Winter Games has launched the “Canada Games Catch the Spirit Program,” a free, national teaching resource for educators.

Catch the Spirit engages students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 using five overarching themes: Unifying Canada; Healthy Living and Sport; Official Languages; Arts and Culture; and Goals and Leadership.

“The Catch the Spirit Education Program is an educational resource that has been developed by  teachers, for teachers as a tool to inspire children about the Canada Games movement and build  awareness of the benefits of physical activity and sport,” said Lyn Radford, 2019 Canada Games Host Society Board Chair.

“This program will get your students as excited about being part of this  once-in-a-generation event for central Alberta as we are!”

This newly revamped program may be integrated into classrooms by educators and used as a tool to inspire children about the Canada Games movement and build awareness for the benefits  of physical activity and sport. The program also acts as an inspiration for classrooms and schools to create their own mini Canada Games.

“The Canada Games stimulate national pride and inspire youth to participate in sport and physical activity,” said Tom Quinn, Canada Games Council Chairman. “This Catch the Spirit  program is a perfect example of how this unique Canadian property goes above and beyond to  build an educational platform which further promotes active lifestyles among kids in schools  across the nation.”

Local schools may book a Canada Games Day assembly to help get students excited about the  2019 Games. Approximately 15 minutes in length, the assembly program features the 2019  Games mascot, Waskasoo, visiting central Alberta schools with a mini torch relay and a dynamic  presentation about the 2019 Canada Games.
