Ponoka Wins Healthy Community Award for new recreation initiatives

Nov 6, 2018 | 8:44 AM

The Town of Ponoka has won a Healthy Community Award in recognition of the many new recreation initiatives that have been created in the community over the past year.

The award was presented by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) at its annual conference in October.

Ponoka’s new recreation initiatives acknowledged by the award include the Centennial Park Skating Trail and Lighting Project – the biggest addition to Ponoka’s recreation scene this past year, Tarmac Play – a variety of fun games for kids to play on walkways at 30 different locations around Ponoka, Westview Park Playground – installed for children and families to enjoy in Westview Park this summer, replacing an old playground that had been removed, and Tennis/Pickleball Court Upgrades.

“Promoting and supporting healthy, active lifestyles for our citizens is a priority for the Town of Ponoka. That’s why we participate in activities like the annual Walk ‘N’ Roll Challenge and it’s one of the reasons we continue to pursue grant funding for a Community Wellness Centre that would begin with the construction a fieldhouse completed as Phase 1 of the project,” says Wes Amendt, Director of Community Services for the Town of Ponoka.
