Fresh off being named the WHL’s ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week, Alexander Alexeyev has been named the lone WHL representative on Russia’s squad for the upcoming 16th annual CIBC Canada Russia Series.

The news was announced by the CHL in association with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation on Friday.

The defenseman, who hails from St. Petersburg, Russia, will play in the six-game series on Nov. 5 and 6 when the Western Hockey League gets the spotlight.

The two sides play each other the first night in Kamloops, BC, then the next night in Langley.

Alexeyev is currently second in scoring among all Western Hockey League d-men with 20 points, including seven goals. That also includes two powerplay goals and two game-winners.

He is second in scoring on the Rebels as well.

For the week ending Oct. 28, Alexeyev recorded eight points, including three goals, in four games. He has played in 101 career WHL games, all with Red Deer.

The 99-born left-hander was also part of Team Russia in last year’s Canada Russia series. He recorded zero points and six penalty minutes in two games.

Alexeyev went 31st overall in this year’s NHL Draft to the Washington Capitals. He signed his entry-level contract with the Caps on Sept. 24.
