RDC faculty members recognized for scholarly work

Red Deer College honoured four faculty members for their achievements at Thursday’s Recognition of Scholarly Activity Celebration.

Each year, a jury comprised of members from the Recognition of Scholarly Activity committee selects the recipient(s) from applications submitted by faculty members. Applications are assessed on innovation, creativity, originality, influence, acclaim and breadth of dissemination.

The award recipients, who are being recognized for scholarly activities completed in 2017, include:

Dr. Jenna Butler | Publication of her chapter entitled “Unbodying the Bawdy in Robert Kroetsch” in the book Robert Kroetsch: Essays on His Works. Jenna Butler is the author of three critically acclaimed books of poetry, Seldom Seen Road, Wells, and Aphelion; an award-winning collection of ecological essays, A Profession of Hope: Farming on the Edge the of Grizzly Trail; and a new travelogue, Magnetic North: Sea Voyage to Svalbard. Her research into endangered environments has taken her from America’s Deep South to Ireland’s Ring of Kerry, and from Tenerife to the Arctic Circle, exploring the ways in which we impact the landscapes we call home. Butler teaches creative writing and environmental literature at Red Deer College.

Dr. Trish Campbell | Project “Making sense of the abortion pill: A sociotechnical analysis of RU486 Canada.” Trish Campbell has been an instructor at RDC for 25 years. Her research focuses on the social context of technology and the public understanding of science, particularly biomedicine. Her interdisciplinary research combines approaches from media and communication studies and science and technology studies to address issues surrounding the public negotiation of expertise and practices of knowledge production and sharing. She has published in the journals Social Science and Medicine and Health Sociology Review.

Dr. Laura Davis | Publication of her book, Margaret Laurence Writes Africa and Canada. Laura Davis is the Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at RDC. She teaches in the English program and specializes in Canadian literature. She is the author of Margaret Laurence Writes Africa and Canada (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2017), the co-author of Essay Writing for Canadian Students (Pearson, 2016, 2013), and has published essays and reviews in Ariel, the Journal of Canadian Studies, and the British Journal of Canadian Studies. She has been the recipient of teaching and research awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Association of Alberta Colleges and Technical Institutes (AACTI), the University of Alberta, and Red Deer College.

Elaine Spencer | Publication of the book she spearheaded, contributed to and co-edited with colleagues: Social Work Ethics: Progressive, Practical and Relational Approaches. Elaine Spencer is an MSW-trained Clinical Social Worker and Approved Clinical Supervisor. Teaching the practice of social work since 2002, Elaine has been at Red Deer College since 2005. Elaine’s background is in rural, clinical and insider social work practice, administration and ethics. Her research interests include positional power relations, reparations and restoration in social work practice, ecocentric ethics, ethics and technology, insider social work practice, and organizational ethics.
