Leidenius, Bakker named RDC Athletes of the Week

Red Deer College Athletics has named golfer Shaye Leidenius and basketball start Eric Bakker as their latest Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week.

Leidenius had a fantastic showing at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf National Championships in Medicine Hat. The Kinesiology student earned two medals over the four-day competition at Desert Blume Golf Club. She was a key member in helping the Queens capture their first ever CCAA national title and also earned an individual silver medal.

“Shaye led the way for us,” said RDC Golf Head Coach Scott Bergdahl. “She was confident and did everything that we expected from a team captain. She birdied two of the last three holes to secure individual silver.”

In the RDC Kings Basketball team’s home opener this past Friday, Bakker was a consistent and effective player at both ends of the court. While helping the Kings earn a significant 93 – 77 decision over the Olds College Broncos, the Business Administration student contributed 13 points, 15 rebounds and three steals, while shooting 50 per cent from the field. The six-foot-four forward collected six boards and added another nine rebounds in the latter half.

“I loved Eric’s consistency,” says Kings Basketball Head Coach Clayton Pottinger. “When I talk about the team being consistent, Eric is probably the model of that, even going back to last year.”
