Alberta RCMP training more officers in roadside testing ahead of cannabis legalization

Alberta RCMP and Traffic Services are showing they’re as ready as they’re going to be just days ahead of the legalization of cannabis across the country.

On Friday, members held an interactive drug-impaired checkstop demonstration in Edmonton.

The RCMP says it has increased its capacity in the areas of prevention and engagement, intelligence, security screening and training. It also notes the organization is on pace to reach its target of having one-third of its members trained in Standard Field Sobriety Test by 2020.

“While the laws surrounding cannabis in Canada are evolving, little has changed for the RCMP when it comes to how to test for drug-impaired driving,” said Chief Superintendent Brad Mueller, Deputy CROPS Officer, Core Services.

“Police have used various investigative techniques to determine sobriety since the 1920s,” added Inspector Steve Daley, “K” Division Traffic Services. “Keeping roads and highways safe for all Albertans has always been a vital part of the Provincial Policing mandate.”

The RCMP is reminding Albertans that drug-impaired driving of any kind is illegal. If you’re planning to consume alcohol or other drugs, you are strongly encouraged to appoint a designated driver in order to get home safely.
