Charity Checkstop

The fourth annual Coats 4 Kids charity checkstop slowed down traffic along Taylor Drive south on Saturday, but for a good cause.

Representatives from the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre were out collecting coats as well as cash donations for the centre on what was a fairly chilly day.

Executive Director TerryLee Ropchan says in partnership with Victory Church and City of Red Deer Traffic Enforcement, the goal this year is to collect more than 300 coats through the checkstop and 2000 total during the month of October.

“There’s always a need, especially with kids getting to that stage where they’re always growing and they grow out of their clothing when you can’t afford it,” she says. “This is always a good option to get some gently used and wonderful clothing.”

Any donated coats are cleaned thanks to several local drycleaners. If you missed the Charity Checkstop, you can take coats and other gently used winter wear to the Crime Prevention Centre, any participating drycleaner, or to Victory Church in Oriole Park.

Donation totals won’t be known until mid-next week.

Laptops will be presented to each organization during an event Monday in Calgary.
