Award-winning author and historian to share expertise on World War I

A renowned Canadian author and historian is coming to Red Deer next month to share his expertise about the First World War.

Dr. Tim Cook will be the latest speaker in RDC’s Perspectives: Canada in the World series and will speak about Canada’s Great War Legacy, 100 Years Since The Armistice on Thursday, October 11, 7:00 p.m. at the RDC Arts Centre Main Stage.

College officials say the event takes place on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War l.

Cook is the author of 11 books and curated the permanent gallery at the Canadian War Museum, as well as other temporary, travelling and digital exhibitions.

His books have won many awards, including the RBC Taylor Prize, J.W. Dafoe Prize (twice), Ottawa Book award (twice) and C.P. Stacey award for best book in military history (twice). Vimy: The Battle and Legend (2017) was also an award-winner and number one Canadian best-seller.

In addition, Cook has been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media. Cook is also a member of the Order of Canada.

“Canada’s contribution to World War I cannot be underestimated,” says Dr. Jane MacNeil, Interim Dean of RDC’s School of Arts and Sciences, in a press release. “This global event had a vast impact on our nation when it happened, where almost 620,000 Canadians served and more than 60,000 soldiers were killed. We’re pleased that Dr. Cook will join us to share his insight about the impact of the Great War and to help us reflect on its legacy in shaping our nation 100 years later.”

Audience members will also have the chance to purchase autographed copies of Cook’s latest books, including The Secret History of Soldiers: How Canadians survived the Great War (2018) and Vimy: The Battle and Legend (2017).

Tickets are $20 each with all proceeds supporting scholarships and/or bursaries for RDC students.
