Soccer stars score RDC Athlete of the Week honours

A pair of soccer stars are this week’s RDC Athletes of the Week.

Mikayla Fujimoto – Queens Soccer
Hometown – Red Deer, AB – Bachelor of Education Elementary (1st year)

A midfielder, Fujimoto was a key player for the RDC Queens over the weekend, helping them to a pair of victories – a 5 – 0 shutout against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Saturday and a 1 – 0 home decision over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Sunday.

Fujimoto’s contributions went beyond statistics as she was solid on both sides of ball, advancing the Queens’ offensive attack and breaking up the opponents’ attempts.

The Queens (4 – 1 – 0) gained six points in the and sole possession of second spot in the ACAC South standings.

Matheus Alves – Kings Soccer
Hometown – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Academic Upgrading (2nd year)

Alves played an integral role in the Kings earning two wins and six points in the standings. In Saturday’s 5 – 2 victory against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, the second-year student-athlete opened the scoring for the Kings in the 5th minute and added another goal in the 55th minute. Alves was effective creating offensive chances in the Kings’ 3 – 2 win over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Sunday.

With the wins, Alves helped the Kings (3 – 1 – 1) climb into a tie for second spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Soccer South Division with 10 points.
