Senior Rustlers gearing up for inaugural season

The Red Deer Rustlers are set to make a triumphant return to ice as a Senior AA team.

The Rustlers’ final year as a Junior A team was almost 30 years ago in 1989. The new senior squad is excited to build on that legacy.

 “Red Deer had such a fine history with the Jr. A Rustlers,” says senior Rustlers captain Mike Dempster, “and we want to couple onto the heritage, and see if we can’t make our own story.”

The Idea for the team came up after many of the guys on the current squad were playing together in the beer leagues, and started thinking if they could revive the “Rustlers” name. Many of the guys that’ll be playing for the Rustlers formerly played on different Major Junior, Junior A, or Junior B teams.

The senior Rustlers will play their first game in the North Central Hockey League in Devon on October 6, and their home opener will be on October 13 at the Penhold Multiplex, also versus Devon.

“We’re really trying to make that a big night,” says Dempster. “We’ve got some surprise videos, maybe some smoke and some lights and the whole big league thing.”

Rustlers forward Dustin Moore feels Penhold will be a great fit as their home for their first year of play.

“[We] couldn’t grab ice in Red Deer, obviously, with the ice shortage and the Canada Winter Games going on this year. We’re really looking forward to being out in Penhold for year one, and well see where it goes from there.”

The Rustlers are hosting both a golf tournament and a comedy night on September 22.  The golf Tournament starts at 10a.m. at Alberta Springs Golf Resort; cost is $400 dollars for a team of four. The comedy night kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at Bo’s with a Hot Stove for some of the players at 8:00p.m. and comedian Todd Ness taking to the stage at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are 25 dollars each and include entry, an appetizer buffet, a beer voucher, and a silent auction.
