Good Samaritan encouraging community to help Penhold fire victims

Sep 12, 2018 | 5:22 PM

An alert passerby credited with helping the occupants of a Penhold home that went up in flames on August 30 escape injury is now asking the community to help the family recover from their loss.

In a Facebook post Tuesday night, Neil Johanson, the good Samaritan who helped the family that night, said he now wants the community to know that Angela Calvert and her son Liam could really use some cash donations to help with the loss of their home and personal items.

His post says insurance takes time and their home is a total loss.

“She still has to cover the costs of her burnt down home plus navigate the daily struggles of being out of work for a week sifting through her belongings trying to recover what she could,” states Johanson. “$5 or $20… Anything will help. Please keep this post positive and let’s pull together to help a family in need. Thank you for your support and understanding everyone!”

Johanson adds he and his wife have already taken the initiative to make contributions to everyone affected by the tragedy and encourages others to do the same.

E-transfers can be made to angiecalvert@live.ca. while messages about security questions are to be sent directly to Angela Calvert at her email address.

Donations can also be made at any ATB Financial location to a trust account set up for Penhold fire victims Angela and Liam.

The fire on Robinson Avenue was discovered by Johanson shortly before 4:00 a.m. on August 30. He was on his way home from work and noticed the rear deck, side and roof of the house in flames.

Johanson woke up the occupants and told them to evacuate.

“There is no doubt that the good Samaritan saved possible injury to the occupants as the house was already filling with smoke,” said Penhold Fire Chief Jim Pendergast after the blaze.

Damage is estimated at over $300,000.
